LAWYERS HAIL ECOWAS COURT ORDER ON DASUKI
SOME senior lawyers yesterday, commended the verdict of an
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court, directing the Federal
government to release former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki
(retd), from detention.
Those, who welcomed the judgement include former
President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN;
constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN; Chief Adekunle Oyesanya, SAN;
President of Aka Ikenga, Chief Goddy Uwazurikea; and human rights lawyer, Chief
Morah Ekwunoh Agbakoba said:
“The decision of the ECOWAS Court to release
Dasuki from unlawful detention, signals the need for Government of Nigeria to
not only respect fundamental rights of Nigerians, but to promote the
anti-corruption project within the context of the rule of law.” Lawyers In his
remarks, Chief Ozekhome described the ECOWAS judgement as “a refreshing and
invigorating air of freedom from the present suffocating air and environment of
tyranny, absolutism, fascism, despotism and executive rascality.” On his part,
Chief Oyesanya said:
“On the face of the judgement, it appears that the ECOWAS
court has done what it was designed to do, to give succour to individuals whose
fundamental rights are infringed upon by government.” President of Aka Ikenga,
Chief Goddy Uwazurike, said:
“It is not just inhuman but it is satanic to sit
in the comfort of our home and determine who has freedom, who breathes or even
who lives. It is gratifying that this court has responded to the cry of a man
who is detained for security reason.” Another legal practitioner, Chief Ekwunoh
said:
“The judgement under reference is salutary in all material particulars,
it being in strict tandem with plethora orders by judges in the Nigerian
judicial architecture for his release, which orders were treated with utmost
levity and disregard, to the embarrassment of not only the Nigerian judiciary,
but to Nigeria in the eyes of the international community.”
