When you start trying for a baby you may quickly realise that just not using a condom and hoping for the best isn’t enough. There are many accepted ways to improve chances of conceiving, including tracking ovulation, lying on your back (ideally with your legs up) after sex and, if you’re really going for it, research is now suggesting that you should be having sex twice in one night.
This advice slightly contradicts conventional wisdom that you should have sex every two days when you’re ovulating to ensure the highest quantity of semen when you do have sex.
Dr Da Li, who ran the research project at Shengjing Hospital found that rather than taking time for a man’s body to ‘replenish’ the sperm, ejaculate produced in a second ejaculation had a higher density of proteins, which speed up the sperm. Speedier sperm are more likely to fertilise the egg.
Commenting on the study, Dr Li said: ‘For years, men have usually been advised to limit sexual activity to increase the chances of pregnancy. However, it’s time to change our minds. Our data indicates couples with relatively normal semen parameters should have frequent sex around the ovulation period. This could make all the difference to their efforts to start a family.’ So, we’re so sorry to have to break it to you but if you’re trying to get pregnant, the answer might just be that you and your partner are going to have to have more sex.
